Jiangxi Science & Technology Normal University

Jiangxi Science & Technology Normal University (JXSTNU) is located in Nanchang which is a historical and cultural city in China and has been praised as “affluent in resources and outstanding people”. The University, which mainly cultivates applied talents and teachers for vocational education, is one of the first vocational and technological normal universities established in China, and is listed in the main construction program by the Ministry of Education. It is also the only multi-disciplinary university aiming at cultivating vocational education teachers in Jiangxi Province. In 60 years of construction and development, the university has formed a multi-level and multi-purpose education pattern of which the undergraduate education is the main task and postgraduate education is the future priority. In 2008, the university was recognized as ‘Excellence’ in the Undergraduate Education Evaluation conducted by the Ministry of Education of China.

HISTORY

JXSTNU was founded in 1952, once named Nanchang Branch of Jiangxi Teachers' College in 1977. In 1984, it was renamed as Nanchang Teachers' Training School and Nanchang Vocational and Technical Normal College was under construction. In 1987, it was upgraded as an undergraduate college and was renamed as Nanchang Vocational and Technological Teachers' College. In 2002, it was renamed as Jiangxi Science and Technology Normal University. In 2004, Nanchang College merged into Jiangxi Science and Technology Normal University. In 2012, it officially named as Jiangxi Science and Technology Normal University.

MAJORS

Entitled to confer master degrees, JXSTNU has 7 first-class authorized master degree subjects（Education, business administration, chemistry, art theory, music and dance, fine arts and design）and 40 sub-class authorized master degree subjects. There are 3 first-class provincial key disciplines (1 high level discipline, covering more than 20 secondary disciplines), 66 undergraduate programs (2 national characteristic programs—Applied Chemistry, Tourism Management and 18 provincial famous-brand programs), 4 provincial teaching teams, 1 post-doctoral research center, 1 National research and development center for the ministry of agriculture, 4 provincial key laboratories, 2 provincial humanities and social science research base, 3 provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers, 3 provincial graduate student education innovation base，2 provincial university engineering technology research centers, 7 key laboratories and 1 demonstration base of scientific research in Nanchang，1 Nanchang scientific demonstration base

FACULTY STAFF

There are 1316 full-time teachers and staff, including 527 professors and associate professors（157 professors）. 857 of them have been conferred doctoral degrees and master degrees and 243 of them are tutors of master's degree graduates. 16 of them enjoy the special subsidies financed by the State Council, Jiangxi Provincial Government and Nanchang Municipal Government, 1 of them included in the ‘National New Century Pacesetter Project, 2 of them are eligible for ‘New Century Excellent Talent Support Plan of the Ministry of Education’. 3 of them is chosen as the ‘Main Subject Academic and Technical Leaders in Jiangxi Province’, 11 is selected in the ‘Jiangxi 555 Talents Project’, 1 is eligible for the ‘Jiangxi Province University Philosophy Social Science Leading Talents’, 12 of them are among the ‘Jiangxi Province New Century Hundred, Thousand, Ten Thousand Talent Project’, 1 of them is appointed as the ‘Jinggang Scholars Distinguished Professor in Jiangxi Province’, 9 of them have won the honor of ‘Young Scientist of Jiangxi province（The Star of Jinggang）’, 7 of them are ‘Famous Teachers in Jiangxi’, 33 of them are ‘Jiangxi Provincial Young and Middle-aged Subject Leaders’, and 65 of them are ‘Jiangxi Provincial Young and Middle-aged Core Teachers’.

CAMPUSES and FACILITIES

Fenglin campus and Hongjiaozhou campus are the two main campuses of JXSTNU. The two campuses cover an area of 144 hectares with a building area of 649,600 square meters, over a total value of 148,633,000 RMB of teaching research equipment and instruments, and a library of 2,443,200 books. The university has 4 well-equipped experimental centers, which are comprehensive arts, fundamental chemistry, electrical engineering and electronic technology, as well as fundamental physics. The university has 229 social practice and internship bases outside the campuses and an affiliated experimental school, which well cater the needs of practical teaching. The computer internet covers both the campuses, having realized the target that teaching, research, library document retrieval and office management are all through network.

TALENTS CULTIVATION

JXSTNU’s motto is ‘Cultivated Virtue, Dedicated Fine’. It has cultivated more than 110,000 full-time graduates since its foundation, and has made positive contributions to the development of economy and social conditions in Jiangxi Province. In recent years, the employment rates of its graduates rank the best in Jiangxi Province. Students have won 1260 prizes at or above provincial level, as follows China Adolescents Science and Technology Invention Contest, National English Contest for College Students, The National College Students' Advertising Art Contest, Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling, Electronic Design Contest, Mechanics, Art Design, Music, Sports, and so on. It is worth mentioning that the university aerobics team won the country's first world gold medal, and was awarded ‘Special Contribution Prize’ by the State General Administration of Sports.

SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH

JXSTNU has undertaken 543 national and ministerial scientific research projects in the past five years, as follows: the national natural science fund projects, the national social science fund projects, the national soft science project, the national education science scientific planning key project, and so on. The university scientific research funds accumulated to 130,777,000 RMB. It has received 50 national and provincial and ministerial level awards. Besides, its teachers have published 3864 academic essays, 1376 of which have been collected in SCI, EI, and ISTP. In addition, they have published 53 journals, and owned 52 patents. The university has three academic journals: ‘Vocational Education Forum’, ‘Journal of Jiangxi Science and Technology Normal University’, and ‘Local Cultural Studies’. ‘Vocational Education Forum’ was chosen as one of the core journals of China, and has awarded the first prize in the ‘Rating Guide for Chinese Vocational and Technical Education Journals’. Also, the reprinting rate of its articles ranks the First in the National Vocational Education Journals, and ranks the Third in the National Normal Education Journals. It is safe to say that ‘Vocational Education Forum’ is one of the most influential publications in the vocational education.

VOCATIONAL TRAINING BASE

JXSTNU was defined as a National Key Construction Vocational Teachers' Training Base, a Local Key Construction Pilot Vocational College, and a National Training Center of Calisthenics for Teen-agers by the State Education Ministry, Finance Ministry, and the State Physical Culture and Sports Administration successively. Besides, it was defined as an Urban Teachers' Training Center, a Vocational Education Teacher Training Center, a Vocational Dress Skill Appraisal Center, and a Vocational Hotel English Training and Testing Center of Jiangxi Province.

INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION and EXCHANGE

JXSTNU has always been committed to international exchange and cooperation and is entitled to recruiting overseas and Hong Kong, Macao & Taiwan regions students. At present, the university has established cooperative ties with more than 20 universities, international organizations and enterprises from all over the world, including the USA, Britain, Finland, Denmark, Brazil, Germany, Australia, Canada, Japan, Korea, Hungary, and Taiwan region. The university signed cooperation agreement, carried out Sino-foreign cooperation in education, mutual recognition of credits, teacher training and exchanges activities, exchange of students learning, communication and cooperation study research projects, etc. The university held many Sino-Americas, Sino-Japan youngsters’ cultural exchange activities. In addition, delegations from Germany, France and Africa visited the university and negotiated the possibilities of cooperation in vocational education.

SOCIAL APPRAISAL

JXSTNU always adheres to the education orientation of ‘Serving China’s Vocational Education’, and innovates on the mode of the cultivation of teachers for vocational education. The university boosts its distinctive features of ‘Providing service for Jiangxi and its surrounding provinces, cultivating teachers for vocational education institutions’ and has received positive recognition from superior administrative authorities and the society. The university has once been nominated as the only national higher vocational and technological education institution and normal university of Jiangxi Province to exchange the university operation experience in the ‘National Normal Education Summit’. Mr. Li Lanqing, the former member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Vice Premier of the State Council, wrote an inscription to JXSTNU as ‘Cultivating high-quality teachers for vocational education, and making contribution to the promotion of the robust development of China’s vocational education’. The university was awarded the titles of ‘National Social Practice Advanced Unit’, ‘Provincial Vocational Education Advanced Unit’, ‘Advanced Unit of Employment Work of Jiangxi Province’, ‘Jiangxi Province Civilization Unit’, and etc. In recent years, more than 50 news media, such as ‘People's Daily’, ‘China Central Television’, ‘Xinhua News Network’ have reported the fruitful achievements JXSTNU has made in promoting the local economy, advancing the development of university itself.
